That is to say entertainment within the confines of my apartment, I've just finally finished watching "Donnie Darko." I've been struggling to get around to watching this film for some time based on entirely too many recommendations. The trouble has been that when recommendations reach a certain level of frequency and vehemence, the book, film, or other thing recommended becomes something that I'm _obliged_ to read, watch, or otherrwise do. I hate _having_ to do things so I often don't end up reading, watching, or doing despite whatever legendary qualities the object of attention might possess.

I really like "Donnie Darko." I liked it alot. What I watched was the director's cut. I don't know how it differs from the theatrical release. For the majority of the film, it struck me as the best film treatment of schizophrenia that I'd ever seen. All the symptoms were present. It was a thing of beauty. The ending was sad, ironic, and had the wonderful mind-screw that made it more interesting and retroactively turned the whole thing into sci-fi. It was a very pleasant two hours.

In other local entertainment news, I've finally found a copy of Emma Bull's "War for the oaks." I started reading this book when it was released in 1987. After about fifty pages, I misplaced my copy. The book went out of print at roughly the speed of sound and I never could find another. It was recently re-released and I'm almost done. This book is really great urban fantasy even though the music and fashion references really date it badly. Think linen suits with t-shirts, big hair, and Prince covers. I love it so dearly that I can hardly express it.
