"I, Robot" and other travesties
Aug. 2nd, 2004 01:54 amA few hours ago I returned from seeing "I, Robot." It was entertaining I as long as I didn't try to associate it with anything by Asimov. Cool graphics, lots of action, robot, and a hot psychiatrist. Normally, I'd say what more can one ask of a film? But this was "I, Robot." It amazes me that someone could manage to take Asimov's work and turn it into a luddite parable about technology running wild. I also kind of wonder why they did this when "The Caves of Steel" would have made a fine film as it was written and still be excellent.
One of the things this brings to mind is the standard casting of science and technology as the villain of the picture. It seems to happen so much in film, yet the reverse is rarely shown. I'd really love to see a film where the forces of luddite barbarism were advancing and the day was saved by some amazing, artificially intelligent tech. That would be cool.
